Women bear the brunt of war and militarism. During World War II Asian women and girls were taken from their homes and community to sexually service soldiers in the Asia Pacific in military camps. The women were referred to as “comfort women”. Japan has been challenged to offer an apology and redress to the few women who survive this experience. Recently, Burnaby city council was asked to consider placing a statue in Central Park to commemorate the comfort women.
